Safety, memories at odds in dispute

CHEYENNE - It's lonely out here. Cars, trucks and tractor-trailers rush by this busy stretch of U.S. Highway 287 that connects Laramie and Fort Collins, Colo.Double-stacked trailers hit the rumble strips as they maneuver around the corner. Up the road is the outline of Tie Siding.Still, this place is lonely. To the east, the sun begins to rise over the bumpy mountains, turning the last wisps of the morning clouds pink and orange. It fans out over the brown prairie, outlining the mournful shape of a wooden cross. .

Suspect breaks, enters, then steals nothing

MANATEE - MANATEE - The front door of a local liquor store was smashed in early Sunday, but nothing was taken, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Office report.

The report said a would-be burglar threw a concrete block through the glass door at the Sweetbay Supermarket liquor store, 2501 Cortez Road W.

Investigators found a black T-shirt used to push in the glass. Nothing was stolen, possibly because an alarm scared the person off, the report said.

Dog bites man

A Manatee County police dog bit a fugitive fleeing deputies, according to a sheriff's report.

At about 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jeffery King, 38, address unavailable, sped off on a bicycle from deputies attempting to arrest him on outstanding warrants.

The dog bit King on the buttocks and thigh before deputies caught him.

Pa. School Kids Like 'Mystery Fat'

(AP) -- It isn't mystery meat - it's more like mystery fat. And the kids in the Plum Borough School District have been eating it and liking it.

The secret ingredient is a plant-based fat substitute called Z Trim. It's been in the school's popular ranch dressing for months, quietly reducing the fat and calories students are getting when they load up their salads and chicken with it.

"It's really good. Better than my ranch at home," says 16-year-old Juliann Sheldon, who used the dressing to top off her salad of lettuce, baby spinach, chunks of chicken and croutons.

The Plum Borough district in suburban Pittsburgh is believed to be the first school district in the country to use the fat substitute. School officials say the dressing's flavor is preserved, even though fat and calories are cut.
